Summer of my PPD

To sum up my personal and professional development this year.

Firstly, I feel that although I don't know what going to happen in 10 years time, from what I have worked on, in terms of my design practice and presence, I am happy about where I am now.

At the beginning of this year I still wasn't sure exactly where I was going to be or whether I would have secured any placements or whether anyone would actually hire me. I did one placement in the summer after the first year but it didn't really feel like it  was a design placement in a design studio where I eventually want to end up in. I didn't manage to get one over the summer at the end of the second year which I fretted about quote a lot. So at the beginning of the this year I wanted to secure some placements, really improve my portfolio and CV, make some more contacts with designers, if not for future career at least to boost my confidence. I also needed to apply and secure a place doing postgraduate courses in London.

so, Aims were : placements, portfolios, networking and post graduate courses.

What I actually did this year.

For my portfolio & CV I entered a few compeitiotn such as the sh! award, D&AD ,  inspire.create.Leeds anddid some competition briefs etc. I won the inspire.create.leeds. poster competition and won a two week paid placement at Brass which carried on and I carried on going there and doing bits of work for them once every week/ other week and have been asked to go back there over the summer.  I was shortlisted for the sh! award, although I did not win it. ( the price was a placement at Brass which I have already won from a previous competition)

I was also shortlisted for the Sh! award but did not win it.

I attended the Creative Milk Round, a portfolio surgery session of which I spoke to Numiko, Clearsilver and Twobirds one Stone. I managed to secure a paid placement with Numiko for two weeks ( but potentially could extend to a longer period of time)

Placements : Brass ( been and still in contact with /  to go back in )  and Numiko ( starting on 30th July)

I've also applied to do (MA) IN CREATIVE AND CULTURAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP: DESIGN PATHWAY at Goldsmiths
and am intending to apply ( deadline is not for a while) to do other MA courses at Kingston and LCC as my 2nd choices

Still waiting to here back from Goldsmiths.

Short term plan is to do my placements in Leeds. Go home for the summer with a couple of potential freelance work for the Rockefellar Foundation and the  do a Masters in London.

Brass Summer placement

From me to Ian

Hi Ian,

I hope you're well. I'm so sorry I've not been in touch for a couple of weeks! its just all been a little bit crazy, I feel really behind with work and FMP so I've just been locking myself in the studio.  I have quite a few collaborations going on at the moment and I really don't know if I will be able to come in anytime too soon really. I just wanted to drop you an email to let you know I'm still alive! I still haven't got a definite plan for the summer yet but I would still really love to come in and help out if that is still okay with you.

Sai

Ian's reply to me

Morning Sai,

Good to hear from you. Not a problem you concentrate on your college work (hope it's now going ok?).

I'm trying to site down this week and work out a plan for the summer placements - so will definitely be giving you first refusal.

Catch-up soon

Hi Matt,

Hope you had a lovely weekend. I know you're really busy but
I was wondering whether it would still be possible if could take a
look at my portfolio again or show it to the director. I really enjoyed
talking to you the other day and its actually making me reconsider designing
for screen! I would love to see more how it all works,
I know it might be a long shot but it would literally be amazing if I
could come in sometime over the summer even for a few days.
I've attached a PDF of my work and CV to the email :)

Thank you again for the other day!

Hi Sai,
I’m one of the founders of Numiko, Matt passed me your email.
He’s really impressed with your work and so we’d love to have you
spend some time in our studio over summer.
We don’t normally find that a couple of days is long enough for you
to get a real sense of what we do and how you might fit in, so I’d suggest 2 weeks.

If, at the end of those 2 weeks we both feel like there would
be value extending that, then we can consider extending.
Does that sound OK?  Let me know.

This will be a paid internship at £14,000 PA

Thanks
David

Studio visit at Numiko

Since, the creative Milkround portfolio surgery a couple of weeks go I've been emailing Matthew from Numiko to arrange for a studio visit.

So, I went in on Friday for a studio visit which was really interesting.

http://numiko.com/

He just kind of showed me the studio and explained what kind of stuff they do etc. and even though a lot of their work was really digital and web based. I found it really really interesting and warmed more towards the idea of digital design

What I got out of it was the fact that if you get hired as a designer in a digital design company, you still just do you r thing and give all the technical stuff to the tech guys...

I mentioned to Adam  that I would like to get in contact with Magpie Studio for a possible placement opportunity as on their website they only have the  'info' address so I asked him if there someone I could contact directly.

I'm just waiting for their replies now

Creative Milkround

I attended Creative Milkround today which was really good.  It wasn't massively useful

ClearSilver

I spoke to two people from Clearsilver and they were positive about my portfolio.  I spoke to the designer who did an MA at the Leeds university and it was actually really helpful talking to her. I needed someone to tell me that its definitely a good idea. So, that was good

They actually gave me another really good advice to talk to the Leeds council about the Roundhay park Branding, this would be useful in terms of research and may be I could try and suggest a rebranding to them.

Numiko

Matthew from Numiko was really helpful as well. I just had a generally good chat with him and he also mentioned a potential for some work for the company as an illustrator and a graphic design.

although the company mostly deals with web and screen designs, they work with really interesting clients like channel 4 and the BBC and I think it would still be really interesting to see how the company is run and how can a graphic designer fit into a place like that

Magpie

they really liked the fact that I had considered the entire range of the brand and how the identity would be applied. their company is split into two- the PR company ( two birds one stone ) and the design company (magpie).

Magpie was really positive about my portfolio and they brought up the potential placement at Magpie so I'm planning on emailing them asap.

They actually asked me a lot about how I went about my portfolio and the
